
Yoga
I am a certified yoga teacher through Open Doors with an additional 50 hours of Ashtanga training with Beryl Bender Birch who wrote Power Yoga and Beyond Power Yoga. I have been teaching yoga for 12 years and truly embrace the many different styles of yoga. I am also Reiki Level one certified.
I teach the following styles of yoga:
Power Yoga: An open flow style of Vinyasa (Vinyasa means to link breath with movement) which takes postures from the different series of ashtanga. Each class is a little bit different keeping it creative, fun and interesting. My class is a physically challenging combination of strength, balance and flexibility postures. For Savasana, the 10 minute rest at the end of practice, I end with soothing music and a reading.
Hatha Yoga: The style I teach is a combination of pranayama (breathing exercises), lots of flexibility postures or stretching, modified sun salutations, and some gentle vinyasa. The pace is a little slower than a power yoga class but still combines strength, balance and flexibility. Class is ended with a 10 minute savasana,music and a reading.
Ashtanga Yoga/Primary Series: The style that I teach is the sequence of postures found in Beryl Bender Birch’s “Beyond Power Yoga”. This primary series, or first series, consists of the sun salutations followed by 18 standing poses, 23 seated poses, and the closing sequence of 11 poses, ending in savasana. The same sequence is taught each time which is a wonderful way to gauge progress. There is a constant Ujjayi breath used in this practice with no breaks or rest until the end of the sequence.
Restorative Yoga: Fully supported postures where there is no muscular effort. This style of class is a wonderful complement to the more physical styles of yoga. Soothing music and gentle adjustments round out this style.
